Trials of protestors in Karakalpakstan reminiscient of stalin-era court proceedings

Alisher Ilkhamov

12 December, 2022

The article was originally published on the website of the Anti-Discrimination Center Memorial (part of the Memorial Society network, based in Brussels). It is about the trial of key figures of the mass protests that took place in early July 2022 in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan. The trail was still ongoing at the moment of publication of this article. An analysis of the charges brought against the 22 defendants allows to conclude that all key points of the indictment are absurd, politically motivated and contradict to the constitutional norms of Uzbekistan. The author believes that the only fair outcome of this trail would be the full acquittal of all defendants and giving up to bringing charges against other protesters.
